Warranty

How long is my warranty?

There is a three year warranty on all of our products. Spare parts purchased carry a one year warranty, and any fitting and/or labour costs associated with spare parts are not covered by warranty. (See warranty conditions).

Usage

Separation toilet: Does the system need electricity?

No, the separation toilet itself does not require power. Only when you install the optional ventilator kit is a small amount of electricity used, powered by your RV battery or solar panel system.

Can I use the separation toilet in winter?

Absolutely. Because the toilet does not rely on water, there is no risk of frozen pipes or tanks. Great news for winter travellers!

Is a separation toilet the same as a composting toilet?

They are similar, but not the same. A separation toilet simply separates liquids from solids, and no composting happens in the toilet itself. A composting toilet is a more involved system that breaks down waste over time, usually with added materials and ventilation. Separation toilets are simpler and easier to use.

Separation toilet: Can I use toilet paper in it?

Yes, no problem. It goes in the solid waste container along with the other solids.

Separation toilet: Do I need water to use it?

No, there is absolutely no water needed. That means no flushing, no pipes, and no chance of frozen tanks in winter. It also means longer off-grid adventures.

Is a separation toilet comfortable?

Yes, the design is based on our popular C220 and C260 cassette toilets, so you can expect the same ergonomic comfort. It is built with both male and female anatomy in mind, ensuring ease of use for everyone.

Who is the separation toilet for?

The separation toilet is ideal for travellers who value freedom and flexibility on the road. If you prefer staying off-grid or using fewer service points, a separation toilet might be just what you need.  

Is a separation toilet environmentally friendly?

Using a separation toilet reduces water consumption and eliminates the need for additives. It also helps extend your off-grid time. Many see this as a more conscious way to travel.

Separation toilet: Can men use it standing up?

This is generally not recommended. Standing increases the risk of mis-aim, causing urine to enter the solid waste container, which can lead to odour. Sitting ensures proper separation and the best experience.

Separation toilet: What cover material should I use?

We recommend to use Thetford Separation Toilet Drying Agent for best odour control and absorption.

Separation toilet: Can you pee and poop at the same time?

Yes. The toilet is designed for that. Solids go into the solids bin, urine is diverted to the urine tank. Open the blade by turning the switch on the side of the Thetford Separation Toilet.

How much weight can the toilet handle?

All our toilets are designed to support users up to 120 kg, without any risk of damage or reduced performance.

Are Thetford Separation Toilets expensive?

Compared to competition Thetford offers more value for money. The complete Thetford Separation toilet (S220 or S260) has an RRP of € 850 and the Thetford Separation Kit (SK220 or SK260) has a RRP of € 599.

Do I need water to flush or to clean the bowl?

No, the Separation Toilet does not require any water to operate. Our Thetford Toilet Bowl Cleaner is water-free and perfect for off-grid use.

How do I dispose of the waste of a separation toilet?

Urine can simply be poured into any regular toilet.

Solid waste can be disposed of with regular household waste (always check local regulations to be sure).

By adding a drying agent, liquids are absorbed and you’re left with much drier, easier-to-handle waste. The Separation Toilet Waste Bags are made from recycled plastic and produced using the strongest material available, so they safely contain the waste when closed correctly and prevent leaks or unpleasant odours.

Of course, local regulations decide what’s allowed. But thanks to the Separation Toilet Drying Agent and our extra-strong Waste Bags, disposing of your waste is a clean, simple and worry-free process.

What is included in the Separation Kit?

The full kit includes a urine tank, a leak-free connection to the urine tank, solid waste container, and a complete toilet bowl (both inner and outer ) – custom-fit for the C220 or C260 cassette toilets.

Which toilets are compatible with the Thetford Separation Kit?

The kit is designed for Thetford C220 and C260 cassette toilets.

Why switch to a separation toilet?

What is a separation toilet?

A separation toilet is a type of dry (non-flush) toilet that separates solid and liquid waste at the source.

Solid waste is collected in waste bags made from recycled material and can be disposed of in residual waste bins, where permitted. The urine tank can be emptied into any household toilet.

It’s an increasingly popular choice among campers, vanlifers and off-grid enthusiasts who are looking for a waterless and believe a separation toilet is a more environment conscious alternative to traditional cassette toilets.

Cleaning and maintenance

Is the urine hose difficult to clean?

During regular use, you can use water from time to time, or add Separation Toilet Urine Tank Fresh to keep the hose clean.

If you would like to clean it more thoroughly, the hose can be removed without difficulty.

Why is the urine hose that length?

The hose length supports the 180-degree rotation of the toilet bowl. When installed correctly, gravity ensures smooth drainage into the urine tank.

The connection to the tank is closed and secure, helping prevent leaks or spills.

Will waste hit the blade inside the toilet?

The toilet bowl has an ergonomic shape that helps guide waste correctly and reduces splashing. In addition, the blade has been designed to hang at an angle of more than 180 degrees, which reduces the chance of it getting dirty during use.

To keep everything hygienic and working smoothly, we recommend emptying the solid container regularly. The blade can also be removed easily for separate cleaning if needed.

Separation toilet: Do I need to use special additives or chemicals?

Not necessarily. It works perfectly well without them. But for extra hygiene and a fresher experience, our dedicated cleaners are a great optional extra. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the plastic parts and seals.

Separation toilet: how do I prevent urine scale buildup?

Clean the bowl regularly with Thetford Separation Toilet Bowl Cleaner. Avoid letting urine sit too long, and use Thetford Separation Toilet Urine Tank Fresh to prevent urine scale buildup. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage plastics, seals, or coatings.

How do you clean a separation toilet?

Solid waste is collected in a recycled plastic bag and dried with a drying agent before being disposed of in a residual waste bin, where local rules allow. Urine is collected separately in the urine tank and can be emptied into any household toilet.

For further cleaning:
• Wipe surfaces with Thetford Separation Toilet Bowl Cleaner for a fresh and spotless bowl
• For urine scale, use Thetford Separation Toilet Urine Tank Fresh to keep the urine container and the hose clean
• Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage plastics, seals, or coatings
• The valve and blade can also be removed for a deeper clean

What if the urine hose gets dirty or clogged?

Use Thetford Separation Toilet Bowl Cleaner to clean and rinse the hose if clogging occurs. If needed, the urine hose assembly is available as a spare part and can be easily replaced.

What if the valve, blade or bowl get dirty?

Thetford Separation Toilet Bowl Cleaner is specially developed to clean both the bowl and the toilet effectively. The valve and blade can be easily detached for cleaning – quick, safe, and without any risk of damage.

Why do I need to use separation toilet-specific products?

Our products are tailored for separation systems, and clean and maintain the toilet without affecting the toilet’s components.

Troubleshooting

What if the urine tank is full and the toilet bowl starts to overflow?

When the tank indicator is red (full), open the tank’s filling cap. This allows the toilet bowl and tube to drain fully into the tank. Then close the cap again. You can now empty the urine tank safely and cleanly – without drips or leaks.

Can I switch back after installing a conversion kit and cutting away the bracket?

No, once the bracket is removed, you can’t return to the original toilet model. In that case, we recommend installing a complete separation toilet (S220 or S260). With these models, you will always have the flexibility to switch back if needed.

My separation toilet smells. What can I do?

Use Thetford Separation Toilet Urine Tank Fresh and Thetford Separation Toilet Drying Agent for daily odour control. For extra odour control, add the optional ventilator kit. Regularly clear your toilet bowl with Thetford Separation Toilet Bowl Cleaner.

Still noticing an odour? In most cases, it is easy to solve:
• Check whether the waste containers need emptying
• Make sure enough drying agent is used in the solid waste container
• Check if the ventilator is working properly and not blocked

Can I install the Separation Kit myself?

Yes, the kit has been designed for DIY enthusiasts and is easy to install.
